I have been thinking about where I can actually take photos and I thought I would start with some experimental shots of these derelict buildings (a former wholesale market area) next to where the Sneinton Market takes place in Nottingham, as it’s a few minutes from where I live. The abandonment is obvious in the character of the buildings and I think that this made some interesting photographs. I took photographs of the exterior of these derelict spaces, and also managed to take a couple looking in to two of the empty interiors. I particularly find the interior spaces interesting as this is an insight into a more personal space. Despite this, the the photographs are all lacking people, which I don’t think this small series needs in particular but I think to expand on photographing this area more, I would need to include people, as there’s not a lot more that I could photograph without gaining access to the inside of the buildings.
20/10/14- I have since been to this area and they have began to redevelop the units, which has been planned for a while, so now white fences are all around the area preventing the viewing of these buildings. They are developing the units into studios and creative spaces, and it’s hoped that the redevelopment will improve levels of anti-social behaviour and crime in the area which these existing buildings attract a lot of.
-A few months ago I shot a set of documentary style photos as personal work to experiment with a different style of practice to what I had been doing in VP. I took these on meduim format and some aren’t correctly exposed, but I find the series on a whole worked out better than expected.
-These photographs are based on ‘the person and their environment’, how this shows viewers part of their identity. In these photographs the person is my dad and his garage, which is an environment that he spends a lot of time in, from building it himself to what he uses the space for; his own personal gym, storage for all his tools and where he carries out work.
More photos show on 35mm around the same time.
